I need a new UPS. I've heard that finding one that's supported by Linux

I'd like one to which I can hook a serial port if possible. APC's
"configurator" suggests their Back-UPS RS 1500VA for me.
ANY UPS can be made 'Linux friendly', even totaly 'dumb' ones,
particularly if you are looking for a RS232 port solution. All you need
is an external RS232 port modem. You just plug the modem's power brick
into the wall power (NOT the UPS's outlets). When there is a power
failure the modem ready (MR) bit will go does (modem has lost power) --
powerd (or its successor) can detect this and shut your machine down.
