Hi all, before I bite the bullet and try Firefox 2 (I'm currently a
Firefox 1.5 user / Slackware), can someone tell me how efficient v2 is
in terms of memory use? My elderly laptop's memory-starved but has the
maximum amount of memory installed already.
Loading Firefox 1.5 with a blank page gives four firefox-bin
processes shown via 'top', each with 19M resident and 11M shared.
Loading news.bbc.co.uk results in eight processes, each with 23M
resident and 12M shared. If someone who has already installed v2 can
run a similar test and let me know the results, that'd be great!
Loading afresh with a few installed extensions gives the following.
For FF 1.5.0.7:
ps aux | grep firechris 16261 0.0 0.1 2472 1232 pts/2 S+ 09:15
0:00 /bin/sh ./firefox
chris 16264 0.0 0.1 3028 1528 pts/2 S+ 09:15
0:00 /bin/sh ./run-mozilla.sh ./firefox-bin
chris 16269 11.7 3.0 120124 31652 pts/2 Sl+ 09:15
0:05 ./firefox-bin
For FF 2.0:
chris 16338 0.0 0.1 2472 1232 pts/2 S+ 09:18
0:00 /bin/sh ./firefox
chris 16341 0.0 0.1 3024 1528 pts/2 S+ 09:18
0:00 /bin/sh ./run-mozilla.sh ./firefox-bin
chris 16346 15.3 3.4 141576 35996 pts/2 Sl+ 09:18
0:02 ./firefox-bin
Looks like 2.0 has a larger memory footprint :-( by about 4Megs resident
and 2Megs shared. Although I'm not sure why you get multiple binaries
running? I only get one instance running.
