Yep, exactly. I imagine those numbers are pulled out of the air to
give an 'OK' browsing experience on as many machines as possible, but
it'd be interesting to get some actual numbers from people in order
to compare. Version 1.5 is borderline-painful on this laptop if I've
got much else running (shell, Thunderbird etc.) and try to do any
'typical' browsing of having two or three browser windows open.
Are you not using the "tabbed browsing" feature that only requires a single
window? Although sufficient memory is required to map the multiple spaces,
the difference in overhead when using the tabbed feature might make a
noticeable difference for you.
You're right, I should try. I used Opera for years though and never
liked tabbed browsing there, so it's not been a Firefox feature that
I've ever wanted to use. I'll have a look, though...
I'm not sure why I don't like it. Tabbed browsing just feels like
a UI 'hack', but it's hard to put into words exactly what the problem is.
I don't like things such as office suites which try to present their
various components (wordproc, spreadsheet etc.) in a single 'managed'
window - but OTOH I dislike the way the Gimp puts seperate windows
everywhere and would much rather that had a single-window interface. Go
figure. :-)
cheers
