Re: Installed New IDE HD, Now Fedora Won't Boot from SCSI HD

The problem is that I originally had a single SCSI HD and added an IDE

is the boot device. In the boot order, SCSI is not an option (Just C:\).
This computer was obviously built for Windows.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 93 746991 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 94 169 610470 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 170 462 2353522+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 463 522 481950 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 463 475 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 476 522 377496 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Doesn't look like the SCSI has a boot partition
$ su
$ fdisk /dev/sda

# Toggle boot flag

# Select partition number (sda2 according to grub)

Fdisk should have shown
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 93 746991 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 * 94 169 610470 83 Linux
..... where /dev/sda2 is /boot

Where's IDE /dev/hda ? If you boot Fedora DVD/CD to Linux rescue
with SCSI and IDE enabled fdisk -l shows both HDs.

Looks like something not Linux is/was on partition 0.
Maybe the manufacturer's recovery partition and utilities?

What's the motherboard and version? PC vendor? Bios version?

Any other ideas? There does not seem to be a way to disable auto IDE

I thought maybe if you switched it to SCSI before IDE it would boot off
the first bootable SCSI device found.

Not really. Is this an IDE vs SCSI problem or a Linux boot problem?
Linux started with SCSI hard drives so I think is should still work,
basically if it's not USB or IDE it's under SCSI.

I hate to ask but could you fdisk -l and cat /boot/grub/menu.lst or
equivalent? And let us know the motherboard and OS versions installed?

There is a boot order, but all you can do is pick the order (you
can't assign a number).

There does not appear to be any way to set the drive to NONE on
the BIOS. When I plug in the drive, I get a BIOS message that
basically notifies me it has detected a new drive. The only
choice at that time is to press F1, which saves the configuration
and re-starts.

Is there a bios advanced option to set the order of boot device?
Ie, cdrom, scsi-0, ide-0 ?

There was no setting in the BIOS to disable just the IDE
drive, so I disabled the IDE controller.

This worked (linux found the drive), but the first time I
re-booted, linux was unable to find the drive. I have to go
into the BIOS, re-enable the IDE controller, reboot, go into
BIOS again, disable IDE controller, and re-boot for linux to
see /dev/hda. Any ideas why it only works the first time?

Thanks,

Don't disable the IDE controller. Just set the drive in BIOS to
"None" Do not set it for "auto". Linux will take care of the
rest.
All you needed to do was to plug it in and you were done.
