All,
I just upgraded from FC3 to FC6. I have a Compaq Deskpro EN with onboard
ESS1869 sound device. In FC3, it worked fine with the snd-ess18xx module
and a few /etc/modprobe.conf mods. Now, I do not see the sound device in
/proc/asound/cards. When I run system-config-soundcard all I see is my
WinTV card (I even tried removing the bttv section from /etc/modprobe.conf
thinking my TV card may be causing the problem). A manual modprobe shows
this:
[root@curmudgeon dan]# modprobe snd-es18xx FATAL: Module snd_es18xx not
found.
Then I saw that es18xx.ko is nowhere to be found under
2.6.18-prep/kernel/sound.
After a day or so of googling, I have found that lots of people had this
problem when upgrading to FC5, but I still have not found a solution. I
tried getting the ALSA source and compiling in the kernel module, but
their latest release must not be compatible with my kernel source (lots of
compile errors).
Didn't you know that ISA sound card support has been dropped by Fedora
years ago? I completely agree with this decision. After all, why should
they spend valuable developer resources supporting such old junk?
