I have an old laptop with only 128 MB RAM and 10 GB hard drive. I want
to run Linux + X on it. Now, I have been reading a little bit and I
have come up with a list of suitable distros and desktops/WMs.
Distros: Vector, Puppy, DamnSmallLinux, Arch, Xubuntu, Slackware, Elive
Desktops: Xfce, Enlightenment, OpenBox, IceWM, WindowMaker, fluxbox,
blackbox
I have tried a few of the live CD versions. Vector comes with KDE,
Now! Which of these distros and desktops would you prefer, and why? Are
there other alternatives?
I guess that choice of distribution isn't as important as the choice of
desktop. I can always disable whatever services a distro might have
running as default.
IIRC. Puppy itself has several one-off versions (like flavors of one
distro) even one with Enlightenment preloaded so you could give it a
spin. Those guys keep it lean n mean and it will run at ludicrous
speeds on your TP. Damn Small will have fluxbox, and it would require
some effort to change that; they've also come up with DamnSmall-Not!
recently for the person who wants more.
I have never seen any pager come close to Enlightenment. E16's pager
gives snapshots and you can move it around right there on the pager.
E17 is almost ready for prime time but only recently did its pager
catch up to E16 (there was almost a ground up effort, you see). I could
put it next to a friend's Imac and you'd have a tough time deciding
which laptop has the prettier face :) It is worth it to try EliveCD.
I bought a set of 3-inch CDs to play with the tiny distro versions. So
it's not like after you've made a choice, you're stuck with it. What
type of work are you going to use the TP for; eventually the desktop
shouldn't be a bother and it should just make it pleasant to look at
and work with. And make friends' jaws drop when they see the screen
raining shell casings in slow mo.
