Re: vector linux install turns sour ...

Larry Gagnon came up with this when s/he headbutted the keyboard a moment
ago in comp.os.linux.misc:

Did you read these instructions at the VL website?:

http://www.vectorlinux.com/Docs/vl50/manuals/vl5_installation_guide_en.html#floppy_install

1. boot DOS floppy w/CDROM support

(if you're setting up on a box with no floppy or CDROM (ie a subnote) this
is the point at which you copy the following in the following order from
the floppy onto the FAT32 formatted c:\ partition:
...io.sys
...msdos.sys
...command.com
Then you drop the drive into another box or as a usb slave to a system with
CDROM)

2. navigate to C:\ (or the letter of the target partition)
3. md i386
4. cd d:\i386 (or the letter of your CDROM drive)
5. copy * to c:\i386 (or the letter of the target drive)

(at this point, if you're setting up from another machine, move the drive
into the target box and boot)

6. go to c:\i386
7. run winnt.exe

you're in setup.
(back when I did MS-Windows support I had to do this several times on
systems that wouldn't boot from CD or didn't /have/ a CDROM drive, in the
latter case I started with a HD which booted from a FAT32 partition and had
the setup files already on it).

I hereby testify that the above statement is an accurate recollection of the
events mentioned therein.
