I'm running SuSE 10.0 on a system which I use everyday. A couple of
days ago I attempted to install additional RAM into this computer.
The additional RAM didn't work so I disinstalled it. Over the years
I've changed and added things to the insides of various computers so
I'm somewhat familiar with the process.
Since the RAM installation adventure the system doesn't boot properly.
I would have thought that I possibly dislodged something during the
process, however the system boots fine into Windows and everything works
like it should.
Are there any hardware glitches being caused by bad connections. The odd
behaviour could be explained by having parts of your Linux distribution
installed on more than one drive. For example, your system boots Windows
and loads the "/boot" partition for Suse, because the physical hard drive
where it is installed is working correctly. Check that all other drives
are not disconnected in some way. BTW, does "sde" seem to be a reasonable
assignment for your system?
Are you using SCSI or SATA drives? The new SATA style connectors
"snap" into place, IIRC. SCSI use the older wide ribbon cables.
The system has only one physical HD. And yes, sde should be reasonable.
I have several "sd" peripherals attached to the system. No SCSI or
SATA drives.
After reading your comments and thinking about it some more I
came to the conclusion that it *had* to be something I did to the
insides of the computer when fiddling around with the RAM. I had
double-checked everything before originally posting. But I went back and
double/triple-checked again. I found nothing out of place. I reseated
all the connections. No change. I fooled around with grub files and
screwed up the system even more. Now the system was getting stuck at
"GRUB " upon boot. So, I reinstalled SuSE 10.0 and things are fine again.
I'm not sure how everything got all messed up.
