Hai!
I'm sitting here trying to come up with a setup to serve a mixed
network enviroment or windows and linux boxen. I'd like to have the
ability to serve files/printers and also multimedia-type stuff such as
ogg's and mpeg's.
It's a dirty little secret that XP supports CUPS printers, you just have to manually configure them. Unlike Linux, XP just stubbornly refuses to autodetect CUPS printer servers. You have to go through manual printer setup, and select "Connect to printer on the Internet", and when it asks you for a URL, enter "http://<servername>:631/printers/<printername>", where <servername> is the name of the machine with the attached printer <printername>. See http://www.owlfish.com/thoughts/winipp-cups-2003-07-20.html
As far as serving up media files, you can set up Apache on the Linux box, and use Firefox on XP (Explorer who?) to browse for media files.
