Live Linux flash drive

Is there anything special I need to do in order to create a
bootable Knoppix or Ubuntu live disk on a USB flash drive?
Or is it as simple as copying the files off the CD?

I want to use it to back up a computer with only one optical
drive and under a gigabyte of memory.
