I suggest you are all on the wrong track.
I smell FUD.
One should be able to reproduce this on almost any
multi boot system.
I have no multi boot systems, but I do have a Win XP machine
with Foxfire 2.0 and a SuSE 8.1 machine with Mozilla from the period.
Access to several sites ( microsoft.com, msn.com, and several others)
produce mixed results. Sometimes Win XP is quicker, sometimes SuSE
is quicker, but never by more than a second or 2. And more to the
point, findings can not
be reproduced.

Doze also uses 1/2 open connections on the attempts to connect to a
server. That make doze connecting to a doze server is faster for the doze
client box. Slower for the unix/linux client box connecting to a doze
server.
Doze client connecting to a unix/linux server is slower connecting because
the unix/linux box ignores the 1/2 open connection and the doze box will
Perhaps a different optimisation. IME with OS/2, Windows multi-tasks
much slower than OS/2, but the other side is that the rapid response
of OS/2 must mean that less processor time is available for other
stuff.
have to then send the proper tcp connection.

Thanks everyone for all the great possibilites. (Most of which are
beyond me...sure wish I had a Linux guru at my disposal *sitting next
to me* once in awhile.).
I've sent my brother the link to the beginning of this thread and I'm
sure that many of these ideas will make sense to him and, more
importantly, he wlill be able to act on them rather than being frozen
in
self-doubt as I so often end up.
