Re: Why is linux slower than Windows (Firefox)?

I've sent my brother the link to the beginning of this thread and I'm
sure that many of these ideas will make sense to him and, more
importantly, he wlill be able to act on them rather than being frozen
in self-doubt as I so often end up.

IIRC there is also a way to start FF in server mode; this means the app is pre-loaded in memory, so when you click on the FF icon, it just has to pop up a window rather than load the entire executable from disk.

Perhaps a perusal of the FF docs might be in order to see if this is in fact a FF feature. If so, maybe Windows is pre-loading on startup and linux isn't.

(I can't recall off hand if this is a FF/mozilla/galeon feature....)

Another possibility - windows is optimized for look and feel, linux is not. That means that windows pops up a splash screen of some sort long before it has actually started the program, so that it feels faster, while in fact the performance is by and large the same. (I clocked this long ago with my parents box; they swore the linux box was slower than their win98 box; I timed it and the linux box was in fact faster to complete the action - but there was a much longer lag between mouse click and visible result on the screen.)

Other than that, some rigorous testing might be in order - if in fact FF running under linux is 3 times slower that would point to some underlying config / network /etc problem.
