I've read a bunch about synchronizing Firefox bookmarks among
multiple computers, and everything I found requires that I store
my bookmarks at a remote site. I want to keep my bookmarks

I can relate to your problem. I would have different browsers at work
on different machines, vax, sun, hp,... plus what I ran from home.
My solution was to have all my urls in an ascii file with
trailing keywords so I could use grep/search to quickly find a url.
Any time I wanted to sync them, I would append them together, use sort
and uniq to remove the duplicate lines.
Ouch.
