Linux, why?

I'm a linux beginner and I am struggling to see the point of having an
OS that requires so much hassle to install applications. I was wanting
to move away from windows but as far as I can see there isn't much
point because of the headaches involved in finding and installing
applications which auto install with windows.
Help me out understanding why people bother with linux.
Thanks
.
