Help me out understanding why people bother with linux.
We "bother" because windows cannot do 0.01% of the things that linux can.
Typically, I can plug almost any piece of hardware into my box, and it works. No driver download, no CD install, no bloatware. (Last time I had to install a piece of hardware on my WinXP box, it installed 200MB of bloatware. 200MB!!!!! of cruft that I had no idea what it did and what it was for.)
If I need a package, typically it involves nothing more than "apt-get install package".
TBH unless you want a steep learning curve you are better off sticking
with Windows. While it is true that Linux offers some benefits that
Windows cannot it's unlikely that the average home user will see any of
these.
Don't believe all the hype that Linux is more secure then Windows
either. It can be if you know what you are doing but if not you're more
likely to get attacked then you are with a Windows box. Windows
vulnerabilities tend to make the headlines because it is the most used
O/S on the planet & therefore the target of more hackers etc.
:-) Really? OK, Apache/linux runs something like 65% of the web servers on the planet. (I could be wrong on the exact number, but it is FAR FAR more than IIS.) Now add up the number of viruses for IIS and the number for apache/linux. (Hint: the score will be pretty lopsided.)
Please don't post this drivel.
Linux has
probably as many in it but these don't get the press Windows do.
Actually, if there ever was a CodeRed for linux, something that would bring down more than half of the machines running linux in a few days worldwide, it would get major headline press. Guaranteed. First of a kind events usually do.
