I'm a linux beginner and I am struggling to see the point of having an

point because of the headaches involved in finding and installing
applications which auto install with windows. Help me out understanding
why people bother with linux.
TBH unless you want a steep learning curve you are better off sticking
with Windows. While it is true that Linux offers some benefits that
Windows cannot it's unlikely that the average home user will see any of
these.
Really? What about not having to reboot all the time? What about not
having to defragment your hard disks? What about the stability? What
about not having to run anti-virus software? What about "more supported
hardware out of the box"?
Don't believe all the hype that Linux is more secure then Windows
either.
Oh please!
Yup, seems like more BS from a clueless windoze user.
The "Honeypot Project" (an independent report) says
"Unpatched Linux still better than Windows"
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=20817
It can be if you know what you are doing but if not you're more likely
to get attacked then you are with a Windows box.
Absolute hogwash!
Amazing amount of ignorance the OP shows there.
Windows vulnerabilities tend to make the headlines because it is the
most used O/S on the planet & therefore the target of more hackers etc.
Crackers. Hackers are people who write code. Crackers are the people
breaking into computer systems.
Correct, & he's spouting the old "M$ Big Lie".

Linux has probably as many in it but these don't get the press Windows
do.
Hogwash again. And this coming from someone who posts from Windows using
Google Groups and a browser to access Usenet. You're most likely more
clueless than the OP is.
Ah, that's why I didn't see the OP.
The vulnerabilities in software for which the source code is open are
usually fixed before the blackhats found out that they were there.
You only need to look at the number of updates say RedHat release each
month to see this for yourself, although obviously not all are about
security flaws.
Yes, and those security flaws are detected in time and corrected in time.
With Windows, vulnerabilities are only patched once it becomes a problem.
Up until IE 7, there was a vulnerability in IE that was already there
since IE 4.0, and Microsoft knew about it - although not from the start.
They just didn't feel that it was a problem and that it didn't need fixing
because "nobody had reported any trouble".
If you like the idea of tinkering about and learning something new then
stick with it or at the very least dual-boot your system with Windows &
Linux.
Personally I think Linux does a great job at certain things, firewalls,
web-servers to name but two however it's not a great O/S for your
average Joe Street.
I don't see why it wouldn't be. But I'll give you this one thing: it
doesn't cater to voluntary ignorance the way Windows does, and this is
exactly what Microsoft is counting on: the ignorance of its clients.
I don't use it myself at home as Windows works for me and my family and
if updated & firewalled is as safe as any O/S IMHO.
Yeah, keep on dreaming. Any fresh installation of Windows already gets
compromised long before you've finished downloading the security updates
and virus definitions. And this has been proved.
Just so you know that I am not some kind of Windows evangelist I
actually work with Solaris, HP/UX & some SCO. You will notice though
that those who use Linux tend to be fiercely protective of it and any
questioning of it's merits tends to get a typical response.
Especially if that "questioning" comes from someone set out on spreading
FUD, like you do. People are already clueless enough and are being
manipulated far too much for us to just sit back and let it all go on.
He doesn't know anything about linux, *that's* for sure.
Look at GE's post for an example. On the other hand if you do stick with
it you'll also find many are very helpful and enjoy the kuddos of
helping out someone with genuine questions.
Then why didn't _you_ address the OP's questions about compiling
appropriately?
He can't, he doesn't know anything about linux & would sooner parrot what
he's seen/heard about it from other trolls.

I think "That's too bad, but they made their choices".
When I hear about companies getting screwed by Microsoft,
I think the same thing.
