Re: Linux, why?

OK, I am fed up with having to pay through the nose for any MS or Adobe

attacking Linux I'm just pointing out that to a novice it is very
daunting and frustrating, when to install an application in Windows you
just double click on an icon and in 10 minutes or so your using it.
So.... I do want to jump on the linux train but I need to know that the
effort is worth it and I will get rewarded for making the switch.

?????

I'm a bit baffled. I can drop in a CD, answer a few questions, and come back in an hour and have a fully functioning system, with browser, office suite, and pretty much everything else I need....

If you want development tools, then I would expect you will need to do some research and find the tools that suit *you*. If you don't have the patience and knowledge to find and install the development tools that you like, then I doubt you have the knowledge and patience to do development....

This involves *reading* the project web pages, FAQs, HOW-TOs, trying different things, and yes, failing. Eventually you will find the tools you like - and by then, a new project will come along, and you will be off again trying new tools.

If you want to make the switch, don't expect to "be rewarded". No one from the linux community is going to give you a lollipop.

You will know when you earn your reward.

(as an aside to Sean, the same applies to Solaris.)

So if you are serious, quit ranting and start reading.

Install the packages you think will work for you, try them out. No one said choice is easy.
