I guess I refuse to get fired up over Vaporware.... It's now scheduled for release January 7th 2007.

If you want you can try Jack, but I don't know if that will give you per-process volume control. I think Alsa + jack might be able to do that.

It is pretty slick, I have to admit. I would also guess that it will available in the linux sound system very soon. :-)
