Hi,
I am finally getting around to dumping Windoze from my desktop machine,
and I would appreciate some assistance regarding distributions and
drivers.
My main criterion is for a distribution that contains no non-free (in
the Free Software Foundation sense) components or packages of any kind.
In addition, it must support a no-name clone FireWire-800 PCI card
(IEEE-1394b) in order to access my 300Gb external Lacie HD. It would
be nice (not to mention save me quite a bit of money) if it supported
my Hawking Wifi dish (http://tinyurl.com/82alk). The core machine spec
is AMD Athlon 1700+, 1Gb RAM, 80Gb HDD, DVD+-RW.
I am an experienced Un*x developer, so I'm not that worried about
installation and configuration issues, as long as there is
documentation to follow in the distro.
All constructive suggestions welcome!.

Suggest you check the last couple of weekly reports at distrowatch.com -
there has been lively discussion of that topic.
