Hello, everyone

I installed Debian in my Thinkpad T43, and installed ATI driver. I think
I installed the right one.
Now my display should be 1400*1050.
But there is a big problem, the screen displays very slowly. For
example, I want to see a movie with mplayer in the full mode. The
pictures are displayed very slowly, but the sound is OK.
Is it normal?

No. It sounds like the ATI driver is not fully installed or not
functional, or for some reason not being fully utilized.

What mplayer output option are you using? 'mplayer -vo xv' is probably
the best choice.

By the way, after I installed ATI driver, I can't find the Xorg
configuration file. Under the path of /etc/X11, there are only
xorg.conf.fglrx-0, and xorg.conf.original-0. So xorg.conf.fglrx-0 is the
current configuration file?

Hmm...I would think that you need to copy (or symlink or rename) the
.fglrx-0 file to simply xorg.conf. The lack of proper config file might
explain the poor performance you're seeing (although I would have
expected X to refuse to even start).

However, the xorg.conf man page suggests a number of possible locations
for the config file. There might be another config file in one of those
locations.

And is there a software which can detect the weight and width of the
screen and the refresh rate?

xdpyinfo will tell you a lot about the current screen. Check its output
to ensure that under "Extensions" it lists both "ATIFGLEXTENSION" and
"ATIFGLRXDRI". Then check the first 3 lines of the "screen #0" section
to ensure it is operating at the proper settings.

And if it does not display those how do you persuade it to?
