A package is refusing to be removed

Hi all,
I'm trying to get a Brother 8045D scanner/copier/printer work with my Ubuntu 6.06 GNU/Linux. If I understood correctly, there are two packages to install, but one has to install them in the right order.

Of course, the problem is that I first installed the CUPS wrapper driver and then the LPR driver (wrong order).
When I understood that I've made a mistake, I wanted to remove the LPR driver's package, but it's still there. I can neither remove nor install it again. I stuck with it, with an icon on my Gnome desktop whining about the problem. When I launch synaptic, I get the following error message:
E: The package dcp8045dlpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.
I tried the reload package information, but no way around.
Breaking news: Ouch, yesterday I could still see the package list from within Synaptic, but it's doesn't show a single list anymore. Thus I can't even copy the output of the Terminal when I try to remove this damn driver. Trying with Kpackage:
dcp8045dlpr
summary
Brother lpr Printer Definitions version 1.1.2-1
status install reinstreq half-installed
group OTHER
description
Copyright: 2003 Brother Industries, Ltd. All Rights Reserved Brother printer Driver
architecture i386
maintainer Brother Industries, Ltd.
When I try to remove the driver, Kpackage keeps asking the root passwork again and again it what seems to be an endless loop.
Any help would be much appreciated.
