Re: internet on debian sarge

installation and post install but keep getting the error "
Sorry, I scanned 1 interface, but the Access

Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please

check your network and modem cables. Another reason

for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe

process which controls the modem.

A modem is not a router.

Are you connecting via USB?

Try Ethernet. Your computers should not be 'recognising' your router at all.

The router is a standalone device that is presumably - since it runs with other software - preconfigured for your ISP.

Now I know everyting is fine 'cause when I boot back into XP everyting works
fine. I can't even access the setup window via my web browser in sarge. I
get an error saying I am not permitted to. I have tried accessing as root as
well.

Sounds like you have ended up on a strange network setting.

I would dearly love to make sarge my choosen OS 'cause it's quick, sharp,
and simple with (I have read) great support in APT . Suse 10.1 is slow
clunky and no support through yast unless you register and pay.

Would love anybodies help as I have spent several days trying to find
information about my particular problem on the net with no success. I have
reinstalled from my 14 (yes 14) cd pack 4 times thinking it must be a hicup
at installation to no avail. What annoys me is that suse installed
beautifully and setup everything (except my printer canon BJC-265SP)
perfectly so it's not an equipment failure.

Thanks a NEW linux fan Al.

Its almost certain that nothing is fundamentally wrong, just your understanding of how things plug together software wise is.

Let's start by dumping the ethernet sufdf from your Sarge..what does

ifconfig -a

show you?
