This sounds to me like a problem with the overlay. You can try to use
mplayer with '-vo x11', so mplayer doesn't use an overlay (which is slow
done, actually works
but failsafe). If this succeeds, go through your video driver's options
or try installing the free radeon driver instead of ATIs fglrx.
This was my postinst commnands for ati drivers (as ubuntuguide)
sudo aticonfig --force --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
everything is fine but I have the problem already discussed. I tried
to change to this (as aticonfig suggests)
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=opengl
but this doesn't work. I cannot even login into gnome.
My card is ati mobile 9600 pro. I'd like to have the overlay up and
running, any suggestion?
Thanks for your help,
Filippo
p.s.
this is the result to fglrxinfo -o command
phil@earth:~$ fglrxinfo -o
Error: couldn't find an overlay visual!
