do you think it is a good practice to restart the Linux, say, every 6
month?
IMHO - it ain't gonna hurt to reboot once in a while. It is possible there
is a kernel memory leak which, over time, could chew up available memory.
Have you ever thought of doing an OS upgrade?
It will almost certainly mean a down time of a week-- or rather at least a
week before everything is back up to where it was before. The
reinstallation, the fixing of what got broken, etc.
I would strongly suggest that they get a new machine, upgrade it, migrate
the databases to it, and make sure everything is working before bringing it
online.
A kernel memory leak should be obvious if the machines starts to swap.
There is no indication that is happening in his email. Just a vague feeling
that things are starting to slow down. Of course this could well be that
people's desktops have been upgraded and thus are faster, and the slowness
of the server is beginning to tell.
