Debian Etch/Testing xorg graphics drivers

I have seen a number of posts on usenet in the recent past where people
have wanted to upgrade their graphics drivers but can't because it will
break the xserver-xorg-core. This does not seem to have been resolved
yet. I use the xserver-xorg-video-mga package and the xorg packages seem
to have been in this state for some time.

I don't subscribe to the Debian mailing list simply because of the volume
of mail it produces and the majority would be of no interest to me.

Can anyone tell me what the position is?
