Problems with USB disc drives?

I have a Gigabank 4GB USB disc. One problem I'm aware of is that
after telling Linux to unmount it (by clicking on the icon on the
desktop and selecting unmount) you have to wait some time after the
icon goes away before it is safe to unplug the drive. I know this
because after the icon goes away the light on the disc drive is flasing,
indicating that something is still going on with it. Presumably a
sync() operation.
Even when I wait there is apt to be trouble. Often after writing
the disc in Linux there will be corruption in the directory. So
I try to write it in Windows as much as possible, and minimize writing
in Linux.
Just wonder if anyone else has a problem like this, and if the trouble
is in the Gigabank drive or the USB disc driver in Linux.
After it gets corrupted I typically have to format the drive in Windows
and start over.
