Our local system requirements mandate that user-related system logs
are kept for a certain number of months, so i'm curious about how to
modify the log generating/removal procedures so that the log files
stay around longer. I don't mind having "secure.27" sitting in my /
var/log folder. I'm not familiar with the utilties that generate the
log files, so some advice about which .conf files to modify is
helpful.

I'm primarily interested in maintaining the standard logs that monitor
user activity, such as logon and logoff times, secure logins/attempts,
etc. /var/log/secure being the primary one, since I only allow secure
logins.

Check "man logrotate" and all shall be revealed...
