Ubuntu install disk doesn't see my network card

Hi,
I use a dual boot system (WinXP/Ubuntu 6.10) on a Dell Dimension 4550
with an Intel(R) Pro/100 VE network card and I never had even the
slightest problem installing or re-installing the Linux OS on this
machine.

Well, now we have a spanking new Dell Dimension E521 with an Intel(R)
82526V 10/100 Network card and Ubuntu won't install because it cannot
detect any network connection.
Now the card is certainly present and the Internet is securely
connected to this machine but Ubuntu doesn't agree.

How can I persuade the Ubuntu install disk to acknowledge that I do
indeed have a functioning network card?
