Hi!
Right now I am using Ubuntu 6.10, and I have Debian etch and winXP
installed as well.
What I wanted to do was to reinstall WinXP (getting slow again...), and
use the Occasion to change my partitioning, because when I installed my
Linux system, I didn't really know how I should do that.
Anyway, I wanted to ask how I could manage to copy some whole partitions
(preferably as is, e.g. as an image) to an extern hard drive,
repartition my disk and get the partitions back onto my hard drive again.
First question: Can I copy a whole partition, and if yes, how.
Second question: What do I have to change in my linux systems to get
them working again (apart from grub menu)
Third Question: Can I resize a partition?
Fourth question: My Ubuntu partition contains both the / and the /home
directories, which I now find quite inconvenient. Is there a chance to
split them now without reinstalling the whole system?
Thanks in advance,

With the gparted Live CD (or running gparted from any other Live CD) you
can move and resize the partitions without having to backup/restore. This
might be better in the long run. partimage will allow you to save the
partition image to an external drive. You'd have to check info on it to
see how the restoration works - I seem to recall some indications that the
receiving partition needs to be the same size or at least as big - I don't
recall the details.
You should be able to move your /home to a separate partition by creating
the partition, changing /etc/fstab and then copying the data out to the
new /home.
