If you're not wanting to spend a bunch on a preamp, your
local thrift store likely has some stereo receivers that
still have a 'phono' input that features a preamp with the
right gain and the proper RIAA equalization.
I frequent the thrift stores around here (one of the best places to buy
books!) and can't recall ever seeing a turntable. Maybe they're all
dead. I'll have to keep my eyes open.
Yes, turntables are getting pretty rare. Actually, I think
I saw a new one in a Radio Shack catalog. What I have seen
a lot of are stereo receivers and integrated amplifiers that
could go between a turntable and the computer's line-in.
selling off donated items. IN an article last year, someone
spoke of how the donated items come in waves, that the turntables
have peaked while now they are seeing a lot of VCRs.
The implication was that the time has passed when people are getting
rid of their turntables. By now, they are mostly gone or are still
in use by their original owners.
What used to be Radio Shack here in Canada now sells a "USB turntable",
ie an actual turntable with presumably the phono preamp built in, but
the output is USB, so it must include the needed circuitry to convert
from analog audio to digital USB. Which sidesteps the issue of a
phonoe preamp. I don't have a clue if they have an analog output.
And Radio Shack definitely used to (I don't know if it's still the
case) sell in recent years a turntable that included the needed
phono preamp inside the turntable, again dealing with the issue
of people wanting to play records in a world that no longer has
"phono inputs" on things.
