Athena and Motif apps run fine with a barely noticable delay in
the same situation.
I ran them (and whatever else might be in a wm like olwm, twm, and mwm)
over 56K dialup to our Solaris servers at work. It was fine with things
like pine and slrn in xterm, as well as Sun's mailtool and cm (calendar
manager). But it wasn't easy waiting on hogs like Netscape to slosh its
eyecandy over a wire.
So I too concluded that some widget and toolkit developers were not too
concerned about conserving bandwidth for actual info exhange instead of
hot-dogging with dancing bears and other mindless distractions.
