I just installed a Debian v4.0 (Etch) on my old AMD Duron v1.8GHz
256MB RAM machine. I would like to know if anyone out here can
recommend an open-source messenger program that supports voice/video/
chat and works with Yahoo/MSN/Google Messengers. This way, I can
really ditch my Windows Vista machine for another Linux OS.
I have given up searching for a client that can do both video and
chat, even though I have an older creative webcam. I tried webcamnow
DOT com because there was no need to install anything but the site
detects the OS and it's under the impression that I own a Mac (non-
windows, you see) and I could go no further. If your distro recognizes
the cam I believe that's a good start. In this case, back during my
search there were suggestions to setup your website with regular
uploads of you from your webcam via ftp (makes sense) and have a
client like gaim or Ymessenger open. A healthy compromise, if you ask
me, if you're ok with running 2 apps like that, and your chatmates may
only have to click on a link you provide for the viewing.
gaim vv (voice+video) would seem promising if (and only if) your model
camera appears on their 'hardware supported' list. But it seems to
have slowed down in development.
I have been trying live distros to see if they recognize my webcam and
it's been frustrating. Yet the light remains on on my USB cam, mocking
me :(
Is it possible you tell us something more about your USB webcam?
The lsusb command might be useful, IMHO, you might need to try:
$ apropos usb
$ apropos dmesg
too. Plz don't search models, it is basically the chipset which matters
more in Linux/Unix land for finding a suitable driver for most of the
peripherals.

I think I may have abandoned setting it up when part of the steps
involved configuring (and recompiling) the kernel just for the cam
(It's a creative webcam). After spending hours getting the dual head
to work properly on an ATI 7000 Radeon (!) card, I held off on it
since. I wanted to use my machine and not the other way around.
