Re: Linux for Video Gaming and Burning DVDs

Hello,

Instead of upgrading to Vista, I am seriously considering Linux. Not
even sure what version I should get.

Right now, I currently use my box for Video gaming and rendering video
to DVD.

Are games like World of Warcraft available to for Linux?

No. There are a few games available in Linux versions, but not very many.

Or is there some PC emulator that can be used to run apps?

There are a variety of open- and closed-source emulators available.

- Wine http://www.winehq.org/
- Cedega http://www.transgaming.com/
- VMware http://www.vmware.com/
- Bochs http://bochs.sourceforge.net/
- Qemu http://www.qemu.org/

Some require that you install a version of Windows within the emulator
while others do not. So you may need to keep your Windows licenses handy.

The various emulators all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Any
given game may run on one emulator but not another. Or it may not run
acceptably on any of them.

If you're serious about continuing to run your existing Windows games,
then the only viable option (IMHO) is to stick with your existing
Windows operating system. Getting Windows games running on Linux is
going to be problematic at best, and could involve a different process
for each and every game you want to run. (Note that while upgrading to
Vista _could_ break _some_ of your games, upgrading to Linux _will_
break them _all_.)

It is crucial to remember that Linux is a fundamentally different
operating system from Windows. Switching to Linux should only be done
when you're sure you want/need the benefits of Linux, not just to "get
away from Microsoft" and not just to avoid paying for a new Windows version. You won't be happy with Linux if you're looking for a free Windows replacement. You'll be thrilled with Linux if you're looking for a free Unix-like operating system.
