Re: dual booting (installed ubuntu then windows 2003 serv)

FYI, thanks ...

bea@frag:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/hda
Password:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 14593.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

OK I'm back in Ubuntu, thanks! The hda is still /dev/hda2, and
required some edits in menu.lst, is there a way this reassign this
primary part back to /dev/hda1?
Thanks

Folks,

I installed ubuntu edgy, then in the free unparted space installed
windows 2003 server. The OS was booting straight to windows, without
offering any option to boot to Linux. How can I fix this? I tried
gparted and setting the boot flag on the Linux part, but this caused
"No bootable OS" messages after power up. I deleted the windows part,
but Ubuntu data is still on /dev/hda2. I can see from mounting the
hda2 that there's reference to /dev/hda1 in grub menu.lst, and I'm not
sure how I can reassign the primary part to hda1 from hda2. How can I
get back to a dual booting OS after installing non-linux oses?

Thanks,
BEA

1) boot any Live CD
2) grub
3) grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 if you don't recall the partition

7) reboot

There was no need to delete the MS partition, you may want to add that
back in first. Generally, it is better to install MS then Linux - for this
very reason.
