Is this normal behaviour ? I was just getting dumped to a 'grub'
environment which did not seem to do anything . Please forgive my
naivity on this , I assumed that it was ok just to blow away the
partition, perhaps not though ?
grub accesses the linux partition to get (among other things) the
list of OSes to boot. Without it, grub has no idea what to do.
So yes, it's ''normal'' behaviour. (Sort of like asking if it's
normal behaviour for your car to stop working if you remove the
battery.)
grub does this so that, on modifying something in the configuration
file, the bootloader does not need to be reinstalled to the MBR.
If you use something like lilo, then every time you modify lilo.conf,
you need to re-run lilo, but then lilo will still work after blowing
away any partition (of course booting that partition will no longer
work). (For those of us on the PPC architecture, the yaboot boot
loader behaves like lilo, not grub, on this point.)
