Are you using runlevel 5? If so, I would suggest switching
to runlevel 3 at least until you get the system tuned and
fully working. (I _never_ use runlevel 5, always using
runlevel 3.)
Boot a Live CD, or boot an installation CD and get to a
shell. Then, edit file /etc/inittab, find the "initdefault"
line, and change the '5' to a '3'.
