thanks for reminding me about using hdparm for this!
so it's a lite-on SOHW-1673S.
it should do udf. I am googling for any problems specific to it without
any clear indications yet.
Your initial posting in this thread mentioned pktcdvd - it occurs to me that
it might be worth you trying a newer kernel first (but you'll want to upgrade
udev with it); kernel changelogs say that a lot of pktcdvd fixes went in
between 2.6.13 and 2.6.16.
