I have posted previously about my problems with Ubuntu and Mepis. I
also can't play DVDs with them. The Ubuntu player wouldn't work at
all and Mepis played it poorly. This was a DVD that I burned on my
Pioneer standalone and it has been played in other players as well as
in MSWindoze on this same PC. The Ubuntu forums fill up so fast that
questions are asked faster than the supporters can respond.
I'm wondering what linux versions others are using for playing and
editing DVDs. I tried to load PCLinuxOS and the installer blew up
with no intelligent message. Even DamnSmall linux wouldn't install.
I used Mandrake 8.1 for several years with no problems so I'm getting
really frustrated. My old PC bit the dust, though. Now I have a year
old Gateway desktop that I want to use for linux.
It sounds to me like an application problem and not an operating
system problem.
Have you tried installing and using vlc (VideoLAN Client)? I think
it's probably tops in the OSS world when it comes to DVDs
