Tapes suck. Badly.
Interesting. I've been doing backups to systems at home since
1989. In that time I've lost quite a number of hard drives to
crashes. But, I've only ever lost one tape in that time. I was
using DDS1 DAT tapes. I heard bad stories about some of the
early Exabyte systems. But, I wonder what troubles you saw.
If price is the object, and if DVDs are too small, then external
firewire drives might be a reasonable alternative.
