Call it whatever you like. let me restate my goal so there is no
confusion:
I need a machine that is low power usage, low heat, etc. It will be
running from batteries. I want it to have local storage in the form
of flash memory.
I have discovered over the last few hours a distro called Puppy-Linux
So Does Mandriva-- you can buy from then a USB flash card whichcontains a
complete operating system and programs. All such systems will use ram
memory. To continually read the kernel say from flash memory would make the
computer impossibly slow. Ie, all will make use of ram as well as the
flash/CF memory.
which has an install mode specifically for this. Unfortunatly, it
still doesn't do exactly what I want. It may very well work, though.
The main thing I don't like about it is that even though it installs
on CF, it loads the entire filesystem into a RAMDisk on boot, eating
up a lot of RAM. I'd prefer an installation that stores the files
directly to the filesystem of the CF card, except that it be
configured not to use the last-access attribute and other flash-based
enhancements.
That makes it very slow. Readinf form th aCF card is a slow process (
compared to memory or a hard drive).
