I uninstalled the package Avahi because I no longer needed it, using
the --nodeps tag.

I always disable the service/deamon to see what would happen without it.

When I rebooted beryl (the 3D desktop) was not running, so I enabled
it. When rebooted again I was thrown into text mode only. If I try to
start x as normal user or as su, I get the error:

-bash: startx: command not found

Disabling beryl from running in the "compositing-wm" file has no
effect, still stay in text mode, no attempt of graphics loading occurs
when rebooting.

Anyone have an idea how to get my system running again?

maybe putting avahi back would get you back up.
urpmi --wget avahi
.
