gnome-wm hangs on load

Hello!

I stupidly tried to install metacity 1.7 but configuring, compiling
and installing, it worked fine, but when i logged out and in again, it
would hang at "loading windows manager"...

I wasn't sure how to uninstall 1.7, but I went to add/remove
application and (as 1.7 wasn't listed there), i uninstalled 1.6 and
reinstalled it. (1.6 was the one i had to begin with)...

Still didn't work so I downloaded 1.6, configed, compiled and
installed it and that didn't work either...

I have now learnt that it doesn't stop loading all together, just
takes ages then eventually loads gnome fine!

ohh, one other thing, when i type "gnome-wm" into terminal, I get
"Window manager warning: Workarounds for broken applications disabled.
Some applications may not behave properly."

Not sure if that's normal
