Installing an additional GCC, and a question about GPC

I know this is such a n00b question, but...
I'm running Mandriva 2006.0 and would like to build and install an
additional GCC with all the bells and whistles. However, I'd prefer
not to unistall the existing GCC (due to the dependency-hell that
undoubtfully would create), and just install the new one under
/usr/local.
It's a long time since I did anything like this, but I remember it was
possible to re-name the binaries, adding the version. Is it possible
to do something similar with the libraries and includefile (e.g. will
the
new version "know" to look in /var/local/include for includefiles)?
Is there anything I should be particular aware of?

I would like to install GPC (yes, I know about FPC... concider this my
Great Big White Whale). It should be added in the GCC tree, and
compiled together with GCC. Unfortunately, it's made for a particular
GCC version, and is thus hopelessly outdated... is there *any* chance
for it to behave -- or at least not requiering anything but minor
tweaking
and rewriting -- and get it to compile with the latest GCC?
