With due respect, Mr. Schilling, sir, cdrecord can work
quite well when run non-suid as a normal user. On my
Mandriva 2007.0 system, the Mandriva-supplied version of
cdrecord complains a little but has burned several CDs for
me without needing root privileges.
.... it depends...
The linux kernel filters away some SCSI commands in case that
it does not run with root privileges. If you do not need to be
able to run these SCSI commands, you will succeed. But as cdrecord
checks for the capabilities of the drives, it may be that it hides
some of the features of your drive from you.
