Curiouser and curiouser.
Did you say that a winXp machine on te same IP adress worked?
Yes. This computer was (96 hours ago) a Windows XP computer, which
worked fine for me for about 3 years. Also, the copy of WindowsXP I
am running from within vmware on the Kubuntu setup has no problems.
And this was/is on the same IP address?
What is bothering me, is that IIRC the Vmware simply connects via the
Linux drivers..so its weird that that works, and the underlying native
stiff does not..
Actually, no, it was not the same IP address. The way I did the
network setup in vmware, the virtual machine is assigned it's own IP
on the network. I believe. I actually reinstalled, since everything
was fresh. An hour and a half later, the same problem, with the same
websites. Slashdot won't load, vmware.com won't load,
toothpastefordinner.com exhibits the curious behavior that I can hit
refresh dozens of times (I'm sure he appreciates me) and slowly load
in a portion of the page.
Also, I've not noticed any odd behavior with updates or installations,
so those servers seem to be happy.
Actually, thinking back, maybe a year ago I threw a hard drive into
this computer to run SuSE off of. I believe I had networking problems
with that installation as well.
The setup is a Tyan Tiger i7505 motherboard with dual Intel 2.4GHz
Intel Xeon processors with a 533MHz FSB and hyperthreading enabled.
For my internet connection I am using the onboard ethernet, which is
only 10/100, I believe, although the specs I'm finding on the 7505
look like they have a gigabit ethernet option as well. 2GB of RAM.
The cable from the computer to the router (Linksys RV082) is shielded
Cat. 5e all the way, and I consider the router to be reliable,
particularly since if I flip over to XP, everything works fine.
Someone suggested checking the hosts file. I don't even know what
that means, but if there is something I should do or look for, please
let me know with a little more detail. I'm more of a web developer
than a linux guru.
thats /etc/hosts. Poor man's DNS.
But DNS is not the issue I think since PING worked to the point of
saying either success or 100% packet loss, not 'unknown host' or whatever.
I am more and more thinking its a higher level issue. Somewhere inside
Firefox...or a firefox/memory/x-windows issue maybe.
You ARE running te latest firefox I hope? there was at least one release
that was flakey as hell.
I agree, I do not believe it is a DNS problem. The pages start to
load, I get the title in the title bar, and an icon on some pages, but
that's it. And yes, the pings don't fail lookup. I receive an ip
address for basically whatever I type in.
I also can't blame firefox, because a fresh Kubuntu install only has
Konqueror, and it has the same problem, even before I install
firefox. Firefox IS the latest stable build, however.
I have a 'dumb' linux question, for my next idea. I know windows
doesn't complain if I turn it off, jam a new network card in, and turn
it back on. It sets it up and everything. If I do that with Kubuntu,
will it take care of the setup? Just on the odd chance it's my
onboard card, I DO have another downstairs I can plug in and try.
Thanks again for all your help, Philosopher. I owe you one. Let me
know if you have further suggestions, please.
