SSH, it's secure and easy to set up. I get over 4Mb/s transfer rate here.
I set up SAMBA on the LInux machine and the MAC (running the very
latest OSX) can copy files to the SAMBA share at lightning speeds.
When I try and copy files from the LInux machine to the Mac they take
an eternity.
You sound a bit confused, or you're trying to confuse us. If you're using your Mac to copy files from a Samba share on your Linux PC, then your Mac is using Samba too, maybe smbclient or something similar. If you want to share file from your Mac to Linux then you have to make sure SMB ("windows" file sharing) is turned on, on your Mac. They both use Samba.
By the way, i don't think Samba is an acronym, no need to capitalize the name.
