apt-get install rcconf
Hmmm. I'm not familiar with that tool. I normally manually edit my
services/daemons that run at boot. Generally by rm-ing the entries in /
etc/rc?.d/.
As far as rpc.statd, I believe that it gets started by portmap. Which is
odd since it doesn't get stopped when you stop portmap. The rpc probably
standing for those remote procedure calls, just like windows. If you
don't run file or print sharing over your network, you probably don't
"need" to have it running.
I don't really care to have anything with "remote" in it's name running
on my machine. I do care about security, but I'm no expert. Therefor
anything that might expose me that doesn't need to be running doesn't
run. Plus with the fewer/fewest things running, the more resources I
have available (speed/space).
