Also, on some sites, it seems that if I keep hitting refresh, a little

means, but it may be helpful.
Have you checked your MTU settings to see if they're optimized? Since
you're having slow connection/transfer speeds, can I assume that you're
on dialup? Or are you the impatient type, even on broadband?

Shadow_7, I hope you are on to something with this. I do own an XBox
360, and did have to change the MTU setting on my router in order for
it to work online. It is now set to 1460 bytes. And no, I am not on
dialup. I am on an ADSL connection, although not a particularly
speedy one. The issue isn't really about impatience though, since
pages either will load very quickly, or not at all-ever. Also, none
of the other computers in the house have this issue, however they are
either Windows or Mac.

I do not understand MTU, honestly, but if that is part of the issue,
particularly since I had to change the setting on my router, what
would you recommend I try, being on an ADSL connection (about 1MBps
downstream)? Thank you in advance!

This link will tell you a lot about MTU:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_transmission_unit

On my machine, the MTU is 1492 bytes, which is what Verizon recommends for
their FiOS service.

Their service uses PPPoE between the router and their network, and they want
the computer's ethernet connection to 1492. I have a Linux system and by
default, it sets up to 1500:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:30:48:29:1D:5E
inet addr:192.168.1.251 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:974794 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:714474 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:618412494 (589.7 Mb) TX bytes:628211239 (599.1 Mb)
Base address:0x3000 Memory:fc200000-fc220000

eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:27:CA:C0:75
inet addr:192.168.0.251 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:2510582 errors:0 dropped:10 overruns:0 frame:5980202
TX packets:1417546 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2205630278 (2103.4 Mb) TX bytes:182552188 (174.0 Mb)

eth0 and eth1 are LAN connections, although eth1 is not used at the moment.
eth2 goes to the Internet. They seem to use exactly the same protocol for
DSL and FiOS. So my machine sends 1492-byte packets to the router, which
converts them into whatever they send out the WAN to the Internet servers.
