It looks like Abiword can print from the command line, so I suppose you
could print to a postscript file (abiword foo.doc --print=foo.ps) and then
convert the resulting file to pdf, or maybe it's possible to print
directly to cups-pdf and get something palatable.
I haven't tried any of this myself (well, I just attempted printing a
doc file to a ps file from the command line, and it worked well, but
there were no graphics in the doc file, and a quick google suggests
there might be problems getting the graphics right). I've never used
cups-pdf.
