.profile .bash_logout scripts never get called in FC6

Working on Fedora Core 6. Just tried putting some commands
into .profile and .bash_logout
in my home directory. These commands never seem to get called.
Is there something I need to do to make sure that these files get
called at logon and logout.

I want to have a user-customizable login and logout script it so that
the file is called when the user actually logs in or logs out (not
opens or closes a bash shell). Thanks!

---Example .profile--
"Here I am doing the login." > logincheck

Problem: logincheck file is never created.
